Front Desk and First Welcome/Impressions
As we resumed our 2018 Fitness Travel Series and kicked off our summer excursions, we did so at the beautiful Red Mountain Resort located on the serene edge of the Snow Canyon State Park in St. George, Utah. The Red Mountain Resort & spa blended naturally into a landscape of vivid red rock cliffs and canyons of southern Utah, and offered guests a wide range of relaxation packages as well as outdoor and indoor activities sure to appease your passion for adventure.
In the last 14 years alone, the Red Mountain Resort & Spa has received well over 100 awards and accolades from some of the most highly acclaimed networks in the industry.
That is why it was no surprise that upon arrival we immediately felt all of the professionalism, comfort and excitement that the resort has to offer.
For the means of this review, Rich and I received the Red Mountain Essential Retreat Package. Price: $305* per person. Included in this Package:
- Choice of accommodations deluxe or villa
- Three healthy meals daily
- Daily guided morning hikes
- Fitness classes
- Healthy life classes & events
- Personal discovery activities
- Eat Well, Feel Well cooking demonstrations
- Complimentary Wi-Fi in rooms and throughout resort
- 42” flat-screen, high-definition televisions
- Welcome gift of water bottle and backpack
- Use of indoor & seasonal outdoor pools, bicycles, walking trails, strength & cardio studios and other amenities
Upon check-in we were greeted with a handful of incredibly welcoming and helpful staff ready to load your luggage onto golf carts, check you in, and even provide you with a complimentary backpack that included two water bottles!
In addition to a speedy and efficient check in process, we were given a full itinerary of the events, meals and excursions offered by the resort for the next 3 days. Once you have been checked in, you will receive texts as well from Concierge that allow you to book activities, reserve your table for dinner and so much more all from the comfort of your phone without ever having to make the trip to guest services again. Comfort and efficiency were the key standouts when we first arrived which immediately gave us a sense of excitement and ease.
We were then escorted to our room which far surpassed our expectations. Before arrival guests are offered a choice between either a Deluxe Room or a Villa, both exceptional options.
Rich and I were treated to a private Villa which included 1,100 luxurious square feet of living space with a king bed, all the amenities of the Deluxe rooms, plus a natural gas fireplace, balcony or deck, and master bath with over-sized shower and soaking tub. This room more than comfortably accommodates up to 2 adults. However, though this is a pet friendly resort- be mindful that the Villas do not allow pets.
We were absolutely blown away by the amount of space that is given to even just two guests! Red Mountain even treated us to an amazing Resort cookbook as a keepsake from our time with them.
Fitness Facilities Overview
Of course the huge focus of this review and our entire travel series are the fitness centers offered by various resorts, as well as the activities available to create the ultimate active escapes. In terms of fitness activities (both indoor & out) offered by the resort, this was hands down the most well thought-out, exciting and organized Resort we have experienced yet.
As I stated before, the all-inclusive list of activities made it a breeze to sign up for any and all activities offered by the Red Mountain Resort. Note that not all activities require a sign up prior to the event, many allow you to simply show up at the start time and enjoy!
Activities involve everything from hiking the beautiful Snow Canyon State Park, to taking part in a Drums Alive class instructed by the awesome and energetic Carrie Ekins.
Aside from the playground offered by nature itself, the Red Mountain Resort also offers Personal Training, Whole Body Wellness courses and Wellness Workshops. The resort has its own fully equipped gym for those wishing to get in their own training on their own time as well as a handful of Fitness Studios that host the various wellness classes throughout the day.
Our experience, Recommendations & What We Did
Since Rich and I arrived around 4p.m on Friday, the first night was really all about settling in and getting a feel for all the resort had to offer.
Once we unloaded our belongings in our room, we quickly dressed to impress and made our way to our first 3-course-dinner at the Canyon Breeze Restaurant.
After our delicious meal, we made our way upstairs to the Bryce Canyon Room to engage in An Evening With An Intuitive hosted by the lovely Diana White. Diana opened us up into her world of aura readings & balancing energy fields with her gift of intuitive healing.
Our first proper day on the resort with a 6:30am start at the resorts Canyon Breeze Restaurant which offers a plentiful buffet for guests to enjoy before they set off on their adventures for the day. The resort takes great pride in offering a wide variety of dietary needs and accommodations to those who request it.
Rich and I embarked on the Daily Guided Group Hiking with the Explorer Hike which is an excellent choice for entry level hikers. Our group size was quite intimate at only four individuals so it really allowed our incredible hike leader, Shana to take the time to allow us to admire the scenery with stops for photos and guide interpretations. Our hike contained paved walking paths as well as unpaved trails of uneven terrain with red rock, sand & lava rock. Distances varied between 2.5 to 4 miles with an average elevation change of 350 feet.
After our great outdoor adventure we returned to the Canyon Breeze Restaurant for yet another buffet style meal with the incredibly hospitable and gracious resort manger, Tracey Welsh. We had the pleasure of sitting down with her and understanding exactly why and how the Red Mountain Resort has come to be the great escape that it is today. You can really see the passion and dedication that goes into making this resort something truly special for any and all athletes or fitness enthusiasts. The work that the Red Mountain Resort team has done throughout the years radiates in the life-changing experience that the guest are sure to have!
After a very satisfying lunch we rushed to Fitness Studio 3 to take part in a A Good Night’s Sleep instructed by Certified Sivananda Yoga Instructor, Ian White. We were again a quite intimate sized group that was given yoga mats, blankets and firm pillows as we were guided through the steps and tips on how to achieve a peaceful and restful nights sleep. Needless to say, the class put us right to sleep, and I mean that in a fantastic way!
Not 15 minutes later the tune changed completely as we took part in Carrie Ekins Drums Alive class! This fast-paced and absolutely exhilarating workout was one of the highlights of our trip. We just so happened to have a class size of well over 20 women….and Rich! We laughed until we cried, we danced like fools and got a serious workout in for 45 minutes of total madness. At the end, Carrie even guided us as we pretended to be on a Las Vegas stage performing alongside of J-Lo and Celine Dion, it was a workout we will never forget.
To wrap up our insanely productive day, we took part in Daniel Adams, Drumming From The Heart evening class. No musical experience is required to benefit from the power of music and sound healing. Daniel specializes in consciousness work, nurturing parent/child relationships, grief work, and having fun.
On our final day, we arose again bright and early to enjoy one more amazing buffet breakfast and then it was off to a Kayenta Bike Ride hosted by our wonderful guides, Lisa & Dennis. This dynamic duo showed us the beautiful city of Ivins as we adventured into the Kayenta Art Village for a quick pit-stop to explore the various art galleries, coffee shop and vibrant culture that is deeply rooted here in Utah.
Summary Of Resort
To summarize this resort, this truly felt like an experience that we will never forget. The sheer amount of activities and excitement that the resort offers is outstanding and we are eager to put together an exclusive group of Athlete Insight members to embark on a fitness retreat to Red Mountain Resort & Spa. This health and wellness resort did not lack in a single quality and caters to your adventurous, dietary, mental, spiritual and physical needs! We highly recommend the Red Mountain Resort to any one looking for a luxurious yet health-conscience escape for a few days, weeks or even hours (as they accommodate day visits as well!).
Usefulness For Athletes: Athletes will find that this is a resort that they can rely on when traveling for sport or simply to remain accountable on their fitness journey. Portion sizes for dinners do run significantly smaller than what one might expect, so athletes requiring a significant amount of calorie intake-be advised.
