Bombas Socks Review: What Do We Make Of Them?

Thank you to Bombas Socks for sending us their products for review, however this will never influence our unbiased opinions on products. Our readers deserve the truth!

Bombas socks are pitched as the Tom’s of the sock world, donating one pair of socks for every pair bought. Crafted for both performance and leisure, their key selling points are small improvements to the dated conventional sock. They aim to revolutionize the sock game with their premium performance technology and comfort, aiding you to “bee better” in your active lifestyle as well as your humanitarianism.

Bombas socks are intended for everyone, and come in an array of colors and sizes as you might expect. There are seven features of Bombas’ ‘sock technology’:

Bombas socks Review technology

  • A honeycomb support system for extra support and tightness in the arch.
  • Extra Long Staple Cotton. Warm in the winter, cool in the the summer, with natural moisture wicking properties.
  • A reinforced footbed.
  • (Calf socks only) have been engineered to stay in place and not worry about the occasional slip down.
  • (Ankle socks only) A tiny ankle cushion that sits directly where your shoe hits your leg.
  • Y-stitched heel creates a natural cup around your heel, as opposed to the straight stitch of traditional ath-leisure socks.
  • Hand-linked toe seam to eliminate the bump that runs across the toes on most socks.

Our Experience:

For this review we tested the women’s solid white no-show and the men’s new Shake-Shack x Bombas solid ankle sock.

I was impressed with the no-show sock as it offered plenty of coverage (a little less across the bridge of the foot than a regular ankle sock) and didn’t feel bulky. The stay-put heel grip was a great feature as it allowed for the sock to stay in place throughout the day in any shoe type, and often thin socks like this would slide off easily. I am not sure how it would stand up to repeated washes however. The material was quite thin but durable, and I also enjoyed the soft material from the no-shows. If you can imagine, they felt very feminine and comforting but still functional and supportive.

Overall, I was pleased with the no-shows and wished I had more pairs and colors than the white I had, as it was clear these socks were better than my current everyday ones!

The second pair was the Shake Shack x Bombas solid ankle sock which felt very tight (re:supportive?) around the midfoot, and definitely less so towards the toes by comparison. They were good for athletic training and the material is thicker over the achilles to help stop chafing which I thought was a nice touch. The ankle sock fabric was thicker and a bit less breathable, but still soft and suitable for pretty much any daily sporting & non-sporting activities.

Our Experience: Positives

So first let’s start out with all of the Bombas positives.

  • One Pair Purchased = One Pair Donated. Bombas aims to help support the homeless community and bring awareness to an under-publicized problem in the United States. Bombas works with shelters, non-profits, charities, and individuals dedicated to helping the homeless, in-need, or at-risk communities. This is the driving force behind their “Bee Better” campaign.

  • Sock Tech. They design team have clearly put a lot of thought into the ways regular socks can be tweaked and improved (though most features are not unique to Bombas), for example reinforced seams, and they have also received antimicrobial treatment, to help prevent the growth of fungus.

  • Community Outreach. Browse their extensive community outreach programs and see the millions of pairs that Bombas have already donated to those in need. As well as their latest collaboration with Shake Shack beginning April 29th, where all socks donated from this partnership will go to shelters in NYC!

Our Experience: Negatives

  • Price. The Bombas socks are significantly more expensive than typical ath-leisure sockwear. They viewed high-end socks as great but too expensive, and low end socks as cheap but crappy. So, they decided to change that and in doing so created a ‘sock for everything’: a performance sock for all athletic and leisure based lifestyles. $12 a pair for the Shake-Shack x Bombas socks does seems excessive. This gets even worse when you factor in…

  • Shipping. Bombas charge a flat rate of $3.95 for a single pairs shipping, putting you now at $15.95 for one pair of socks. (Remember those high-end socks that were deemed too expensive originally?) With that said, they offer free shipping on all orders of $40 or more so the upsell is clear. Delivery across U.S is typically 5-7 business days, but for the impatient they offer guaranteed 2-3 day priority shipping for the an extra $8.00.

As my final opinion, what originally drew me to the Bombas socks was not only their improvements over a regular sock, but their goal to “Bee Better” and drive to donate to those in need nationwide.

I do think that there might be a little too much hype about these socks (perhaps in part due to Shark Tank and the other funding methods they have used so far) as whilst they are good, I don’t find them to be so significantly beneficial that I would choose them over regular athletic socks and pay more. They aim to fit into that middle category between cheap socks (which are worse and cost less) and premium socks (which are pricier, ‘ultimate’ socks), although are definitely priced more towards the premium end anyway.

It’s a great feeling owning something that not only feels great and provides a support and comfort not easily found, but to know that others less fortunate are experiencing this same comfort as well. Giving socks to the homeless is a hands-down great thing to do no question. The price for a pair combined with the often talked about ‘reduction of buyer’s guilt’ due to the great cause does ease some objections to purchasing, particularly when you realize you are purchasing a quality product to compliment a busy, active lifestyle and will last.
